Plot Summary

The movie begins with a flashback of Milkha Singh's childhood in Govindpura, a village in Punjab, where he lives with his parents, siblings, and grandmother. He enjoys running and playing with his friends, especially Biro, a girl he likes. One day, during the Partition of India in 1947, his village is attacked by Muslim rioters, who kill his family and many others. Milkha escapes with his sister Isri, but gets separated from her on a train. He reaches Delhi, where he lives on the streets and joins a gang of thieves. He is eventually caught by the police and sent to a juvenile home.

Years later, Milkha joins the Indian Army, where he discovers his talent for running. He is selected for the national athletics team after winning a race against a champion runner. He trains under Gurudev Singh, a former Olympian who becomes his mentor and friend. He also reunites with Biro, who is now married to another man. He falls in love with her again, but she rejects him due to her loyalty to her husband.

Milkha participates in various international competitions, winning medals and breaking records. He becomes famous as "The Flying Sikh", a nickname given by Pakistan's General Ayub Khan. He also faces several challenges, such as racism, corruption, politics, injuries, and personal trauma. He suffers a setback at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where he fails to qualify for the finals of the 200m and 400m events. He blames himself for losing focus due to his attraction to Stella (Rebecca Breeds), an Australian swimmer.

Milkha bounces back at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, where he wins gold medals in both 200m and 400m events. He also wins gold at the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, becoming the first Indian to do so in athletics. He dedicates his victory to his country and his late father.
