Plot Summary

The movie begins with the old Shah Jahan (Kabir Bedi) imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb (Arbaaz Khan), who has usurped the throne. Shah Jahan reminisces about his past through a series of flashbacks. He recalls how he met and fell in love with Arjumand Bano (Sonya Jehan), the daughter of his father's chief minister. He also remembers how he faced many challenges and enemies, such as his stepmother Noor Jahan (Pooja Batra), who wanted to rule the empire through her husband Jahangir (Arbaaz Ali Khan), and his brother-in-law Asif Ali Khan (Shahid Khan), who coveted Arjumand Bano. He also recounts how he became the emperor after his father's death and how he built a glorious empire with Arjumand Bano, whom he renamed Mumtaz Mahal, by his side.

The movie then shows the tragic death of Mumtaz Mahal while giving birth to their fourteenth child. Shah Jahan is devastated by her loss and decides to build a mausoleum in her memory that would surpass all other monuments in beauty and grandeur. He hires the best architects, artisans, and craftsmen from all over the world to construct the Taj Mahal, which takes 22 years to complete. However, his obsession with the Taj Mahal leads him to neglect his other duties and responsibilities as an emperor. His sons grow up to be ambitious and rebellious, especially Aurangzeb, who plots to overthrow his father and seize the throne. The movie ends with Shah Jahan dying in captivity, gazing at the Taj Mahal from his window.
